Read 'n' Seed 1: Trash Talk and Paper or Plastic

1. I chose two books because they were a little shorter, they are Trash Talk and Paper or Plastic: Searching for Solutions to an Over Packaged World.

2. Trash talk is about inspiring people to help reduce the amount a waste they produce. It helps people learn new ways to be less wasteful and help our environment/earth become better. In Paper or Plastic it looks at the controversy of always using paper or plastic but also new ways of bagging groceries or whatever else we use them for. In the book the author thinks its pointless to waste are resources making them.

3. I chose these books because these are two topics that everyone is talking about now days. It’s the new way to be eco-friendly. I also would like to share the information that I learn with others, to try and help them make more eco-friendly choices.

5. Trash Talk is about 188 pages and Paper or Plastic is 168. I am thinking of dividing them up with Trash Talk the first and second quarter and then Paper or Plastic the third and forth quarter. This way I will have enough to talk about for each Read 'n' Seed. I will do half of each book for each quarter, because I am not sure how many chapters they are yet.

           

Share & Voice: Great Minnesota Beach Sweep 2009

I decided to volunteer for the Great Minnesota Beach Sweep, that was mentioned in class. My classmate Amanda and I decided to do it together. I learned more about where to volunteer at Great Lakes Aquarium. There were a couple of places I could volunteer at. I chose Chester Bowl because I live close to it and I go running in it, so it would mean a lot to clean up an area I use! When I arrived on Sunday, we were handed a big garbage bag, gloves, and a data collection sheet of what you found. I decided to walk the path that I usually run, surprisingly it wasn't as full of garbage as I thought. I did find a lot of cigarette butts, actual that was what I found the most and second were either gum wrappers or food wrappers. Since people get fines for littering, I think people should get fines for throwing their cigarette butts on the ground. I even notice when you pull up to a stop when you are driving and look in the grass next you and you could probably see/pick up at least 100 or more cigarette butts. Just think about if no one would liter a cigarette butt, and would pick up their own, our environment would be a lot cleaner and so would areas where we live. I know it is a small object but even the small things count.

I would like to help this organization again, because I think what they are doing is a very positive thing for our environment and every bit helps!! The best part of volunteering was getting a cool re-usable bag that I can use for groceries and other things! :)

Reflection Post: Week 1 & 2

The first week in class I learned that everything we do in our class is going to be on a blog. After we started the blog, it was challenging but I think it’s going to be ok! (It’s growing on me J) We also did a class activity and realized we need to work together to improve the environment around us. We also need to realize that the environment we live in effects how you live.

The second week of class we looked at the environment and government. We looked at different quotes and we had to see how they related to the environment, everyone had really great ideas! I also really liked the 60-minuet video that we watched; it really opened up my eyes not only on global warming but politics. We also learned more about blogging, like posting on our blog and permalinks. It was challenging but I am excited to do more!
